What falls under knowledge migrant?
In the current labor market, it has become very attractive for Dutch companies to hire knowledge migrants. These are highly educated individuals outside of Europe who want to come to the Netherlands to work, for example. Think, for example, of scientists, researchers, and teachers. How long can you stay in the Netherlands as a knowledge migrant?
When you are in the Netherlands as a highly skilled migrant, in principle you may stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of five years. This period can be extended if you still meet the conditions. If you want to stay in the Netherlands longer after the highly skilled migrant scheme, you may have to apply for another residence permit or consider becoming a Dutch citizen. Requirements for a knowledge migrant residence permit
To apply for a residence permit for knowledge migrants, you must first meet the following conditions listed below:
- Id: You have a valid travel document, passport or ID card to identify yourself.
- Dwelling: You live mainly in the Netherlands and spend most of your time there.
- Danger: You do not pose a danger to public order or national security because you have committed a crime in the past, for example.
- Valid residence permit: You already hold a valid residence permit that is renewable. Your current residence permit must also not contain false information.
What must a knowledge migrant meet according to the requirements?

- Employment contract: You have an employment contract with an employer or research institution in the Netherlands.

- What documents do you send along: Check which documents are needed and collect them before the educational institution submits the application. Make sure official foreign documents are legalized and translated into Dutch to avoid any delays.
- Submit application: You submit the application for your residence permit to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
- Payment: You pay the usual application fee for a residence permit as a highly skilled migrant. This costs €350.
- IND Decision: the IND has 90 days to make a decision. In some cases, the decision may take longer, for example, if the application is not complete. You will receive a letter with the decision, which can be positive or negative. In case of a positive decision, you will receive the 'residence permit knowledge migrant'. In case of a negative decision, you have the possibility to object to the IND's decision.
- Collection of residence permit: when the decision of the IND is positive, you will receive a notification when the residence permit is ready at the IND desk. Collection can be done by appointment only.
